Henryk Gorecki (1933-2010)

Polish composer Henryk Gorecki has died in his hometown of Katowice at age 76. Best known for his 1976 composition “Symphony No. 3″ or the “Symphony of Sorrows,” which became an unexpected hit after it was released in 1992 on an Elektra Nonesuch symphony recording with conductor David Zinman, Gorecki actually started out as modernist composer in Poland during the ’50s. Last month, Gorecki was awarded the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest honor.
